A story about magic. Kellen is about to turn 16, in his culture he has to complete four trials before his birthday to become a magi. But Kellen has no magic and time is running out, fast.
He uses his cunning and tricks to pass the first test, but it back fires when his sister tries to get his magic working by inadvertently killing him.
Ferius Parfax is a mysterious Argosi woman, who turns up just in time to save Kellen’s life. They form a bond and she teaches him that magic isn’t the be all and end all.
While this story is lacking in world building, it make up for it by having Kellen as its main character. He is witty and takes everything on his chin, even when he finds out secrets of his past. He goes on fighting for the right thing, even though he’s labelled as the villain.
The secondary characters didn’t bring anything to the story they were all meh and just stuck up fools, who thought they were better than anyone without magic. But the redeeming character was the squirrel cat, think Rocket in Guardians of the Galaxy and you have your perfect sidekick/business partner.
I liked the fact that Kellen was made to think for himself and wasn’t given the answers straight away, we saw Kellen grow through out the book into a more well rounded young man.
I’m hoping the second book has more world building and will take us on the adventure we have been waiting for.
