This was a very unique book and I really liked it. I loved the magic system in this book as it was something I'd never seen before. Bands on your arms represent each kind of magic and you basically have to unlock the band to use certain spells.
I really liked the main character Kellan as he wasn't this really powerful spellcaster. He was however, very smart and would use that to his advantage to get around sticky situations. His people solved every problem with magic but Kellan was forced to learn how to excel without it.
There were a lot of twists and turns in this book and I had no idea what would happen next most of the time! I loved that this book really put across the message that not everything is how it seems and that the world is never black and white. It really depends on your viewpoint, it also shows how our societies and families can influence this viewpoint.
Overall this was a really good fantasy read and I would recommend it!
