This is a fantasy YA set in a world of mages - a powerful link to their land, heavily influenced by their culture and upholding traditions (and making your family proud). Think deserts, far-flung kingdoms (Agrabah-style just with no POC [that I've seen]), and the trials and tribulations it takes to become a *MAGE* from the perspective of a teenager (whose magic has also gone missing 😲). In order to become a Mage, you must pass four trials that test the mettle of your magic buuuuuuut when you're magic goes missing what do you do????????? Well, apparently you just con everyone into thinking you still have magic and win the duel against a powerful opponent by getting into his head (very Starlord-esque 😂)
I found the PoV of the main character to be really well written, I thoroughly enjoyed his conversation style and his personality - the book was recommended to me as a fan of the Guardians of the Galaxy and I totally understand why, this main character has a very Starlord-type personality, especially in the way in which he views the problems posed to him - he's smart but snarky 😊 which makes for a good read. You can't help but instantly want to support him and be on his side (although his intentions really aren't too clear - from what I gathered he just doesn't want to end up as one of the normal people + couple that with coming from a famous powerful family, he doesn't want to be embarrassed) - all-in-all I think he's a great character tbh.

The writing style is enjoyable, snarky but intelligent, and a great page-turner. I, myself, am currently being left in shock as I've only read an excerpt and as such have been left on a major cliff-hanger 😩 and am currently battling 'will she won't she out him as a con-man' scenarios.
I can't wait to read the full book and definitely recommend it as a book that should be on your TBR list.
