For people who know me, they are very aware that I belong mainly to two fandoms – A Song of Ice and Fire/ Game of Thrones, and Harry Potter. So when I read about this new fantasy novel, spell casting, rivalling houses, becoming someone else unexpected in order to survive, I knew I had to read it!
Kellen is the son of a powerful Jan’Tep mage, and is older brother to a sister who outperforms him in most aspects of their lives. All Kellan wants is to spark his bands before his sixteenth birthday, to avoid being shunned and cast out to the Sha’Tep community. He cannot bare the shame his failures bring to his family, and considers all manner of methods to pass his mage trials.
The story itself is a brilliant balance of action, adventure, and the desperation of a fifteen year old trying to prove himself to his family. Though Kellen soon learns that sometimes im order to ve your greatest self, you must do, and become, that which your “people” look down on – something no one thought you would ever be with your high profile family name.
Protagonists in this book are very well developed, and each intriguing in their own way. I still have so many questions about Ferius Parfax though I am very sure that we will learn so much more in the upcoming books! One of the positives about this book was that it was narrated in such a way that it really sounded like the thoughts and actions of a fifteen year old boy, rather than an older mind acting like that of a teenager. Equally it is brilliantly told in a tongue-in-cheek, informal manner, making it easy to read and enjoyable as the fast paced and captivating plot keeps you turning page after page!
