I started reading this book with high expectations (having read the author's other series - Greatcoats). It was really fun, filled with sarcastic and witty conversation. I laughed out loud a couple of times which always wins bonus points for me.
The characters are likeable and interesting. The magic system is interesting and really complex, and you're eased into it, so it's not mind-numbingly difficult to understand. The worldbuilding is not impressive but the plot makes up for any shortcomings.
Was it memorable? Not really. Although it was a good book (thus the 4 stars), it lacks the ingredient that makes it stand out. I would recommend Spellslinger because it's interesting and entertaining and sometimes that's all that you need from a book.
