My first impressions of this book were immediately good, it has a strong opening without any painfully deliberate exposition. The story just flows and the characters inhabit the space very naturally which is a good achievement for a book about mages and magic.

The writing style is very easy to read as it is almost conversational and so the main character feels very natural and believable.

The intrigue and enigma that will drive the story forth is set up in the first chapter but as I have already mentioned without any feeling of deliberate or needless exposition. Nothing feels forced or shoe horned in and and so you can really become immersed in the story without being pulled out of it at any time.

The scenes are also described with just enough detail to allow you to really picture them, it's a very immersive story.
