It is always refreshing to read a fantasy book where the main character is not the best at what they do, and Kellen's lack of magical ability gives an interesting viewpoint on this world where power is everything. I particularly liked the character of Ferius and her blunt outlook, which contrasted amusingly with the slightly stuck-up Jan'Tep.
The plot was twisted and surprising without being convoluted and the motivations of the antagonists were clear and often understandable - you feel sorry for them even as you dislike their methods, which I liked.
The book is well written, and easy to read without being simplistic, and the intricacies and rules of the world were introduced well, with explanations seeming natural and not forced or out of place, and without leaving the reader lost in a sea of confusing terminology.
Overall, a fun and enjoyable read!
