Honestly one of the best fantasy books I've read in a while.

It has all the elements of a typical fantasy, your magic, and people, animal-sidekick-thing, a wise wandering mentor, a love interest but each with its own twist to make it unique.

Welcome Kellen our hopeless main character who can't do any magic and his only power is his wits and ability to question everything. Of course it can only lead to trouble. But he doesnt end up on some far fetched quest. This whole story takes place in his home territories, with its own unique magic system, not the usual elementals, and some good world building of a people who value magic perhaps too much. Enter a love interest who isn't the hottest girl in the world and passable romance which is realistically for an awkward 16 year old boy. There's not much of it but that's because the focus is on the plot and Kellen unraveling the mysteries that make up him and his identity. Add a realistic live hate relationship with his family, like with all teenagers... Oh and enter a questionanle drunk who plays cards for a mentor.

Here is a story of a guy who doesn't quite fit in and whose curiosity will get him in trouble. And try his hardest, he is not the hero of the story. It can be argued he makes everything worse.

And the story is brilliant for it all. Add in so many twists to the plot you can't predict them all! Highly recommend.
