Sebastien de Castell parachutes you into a world of magic. You drop into the scene like an unnoticed observer to see Kellen face his first magic trial, the only problem is he doesn't yet have any magic!

In the opening chapter of the book Kellen lays all his cards on the table. The reader is promised, teenage romance, unfailing friendships, loyalties, arch enemies, sibling rivalry and of course huge parental expectations. That is if he survives the first few paragraphs! Kellen has watched his peers meticulously and although he does not yet have magic he does possess bravery and a particular skill in strategy. Kellen has uncovered that magic is a con and if his magic does not emerge he knows that he must do what he can to win the rest of the trials.

The Spellslinger promises a rainbow of experiences. As a reader you feel as if the characters have existed simultaneously alongside you and only now have you noticed they are there. The authors skill in combat choreography shows in the characters movements which are musical and nuanced. I cannot wait to read the rest and watch Kellen win, grow, fall and (hopefully) win again.
