I loved S.T.A.G.S and was looking forward to re-entering Greer's world with this story. Having read it and the next in the series, F.O.X.E.S, I think D.O.G.S is the best of the three. The use of Ben Johnson's lost play "the Isle of Dogs" was a great a history lesson into a lesser known but worthy Elizabethan playwright. I found the plot totally absorbing and burnt through the books in a matter of days. The pace is light and quick with lots of detail and humour.
The returning characters were nicely developed and the interplay between them believable. The new characters were given space to breathe and become real people.
The only criticism is that I think the author over-eggs the use of characters explaining plot points which are glaringly obvious to the reader. Only happens a few times but really stands out.
