“Either The Hunter, Or The Hunted Be”

D.O.G.S takes place after the events at Longcross Hall which lead to the death of Henry De Warlencourt, and the arrival of two new De Warlencourts- Cassandra and Louis who had taken an interest in their fellow new student (and De Warlencourt Scholar) Tyeesha Morgan.

This year Greer, Shafeen and Chanel are all Medievals- and savage ones at that (for those who don’t know the “slang” savage is used for anything modern and not in keeping with the traditional ethos of S.T.A.G.S). Due to be taking the S.T.A.G.S equivalent of their A levels Greer finds herself under pressure as she is stuck for a medieval approved play to direct for her drama exam, until help comes from an unknown source, in the form of a play lost to time, only ever performed once and then all copies were destroyed- or so they thought, one had managed to survive and now Greer has the first act in her hands.

I adored how M.A Bennett mixed history with fiction, and the traditional world of S.T.A.G.S and the “savagery” of Greer’s own life. I found myself so interested in the play that of course I had to look it up, unfortunately as “The Isle of Dogs” was a real play by Ben Johnson it is very true that it was destroyed so nobody will ever know what it was really about, so, M.A Bennett had to create her own version of it to fit within the story and I think it worked so well- I could almost imagine that being the original play.

I liked the addition of Cassandra and Louis and their differences and similarities to Henry, much like Greer I wasn’t quite ready to let the idea of him go for a while.

Greer is a brilliant narrator as she is constantly making pop culture references, this is something I enjoyed about the first book as well, as it is her way of staying true to herself and not changing because of her surroundings- she is just a normal girl from Manchester who had been thrust into this new (old fashioned) world.

With plenty of twists this will keep you on your toes and you won’t want to put it down.

All in all I think that D.O.G.S was a perfect sequel to S.T.A.G.S and I can’t wait to see where this story will go- as there are 3 other books in the line.
