On my first impression of this book, I noted it's not a book I was likely to pick up based on the cover alone, it didn't really draw me in. After reading the book I can now appreciate the relevance of it to the story.

I've not read any of James Hazel books before, not an author I'd heard of. Having said this whilst the main characters have returned to this book, not having read the debut novel did not affect reading this book. So if you've not read The Mayfly, this will not affect your reading enjoyment of The Ash Doll.

The start of this book a little slow, but once you got into the book it was an easy read. Charlie Priest is a prolific lawyer, but I found when reading the book he was more in his previous role as a policeman rather than a lawyer; Great character.
Whilst it's based around a court case, I didn't feel there was much in the courts, but the best/majority of the book was written in a more investigative way.

Overall great book, would definitely read more books from James Hazel.
