A reformed justice system sees criminals being held captive in their victims residence, caging them to face up to their crime and rehabilitate them through connection to the victim. The Captive follows Hannah (Host) and Jem (Captive) caged in her kitchen for the murder of her husband, John. Once caged Hannah fears having the murderer in her kitchen, his possible escape and making conversation with the man who was found guilty of Johns murder. Jem claims he is innocent of the crime and by living with Hannah these words cause doubt in her mind about the final outcome of the case.

The concept of a victim of a crime keeping a prisoner in their own home was gripping enough to keep me engaged in the book and as the story progressed, revealing more of the plot and characters, it was easy to be pulled further into the thriller. The novel was an easy and quick read, it flowed brilliantly and was intelligently written.
