The Captive by Deborah O'Connor is probably the best book I've read all year. I couldn't put it down and read it all in just a couple of days. The main character Hannah lives in a society where restorative justice is the norm - if someone is convicted of a crime against you, they will serve out their sentence in a cell within your home. I found this to be a really fascinating idea and enjoyed seeing how it was explored throughout the book. Separate chapters are written from the perspective of both the victim and the prisoner, which adds an extra dimension to the story and really allows you to see the events from both sides. The writing is very fast paced throughout, and you are kept guessing what really happened to Hannah's husband, right until the very end of the book. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this and will definitely be seeking out other books by this author.
