I really enjoyed it, it’s a totally new premise to me. It’s set in the UK in what feels like our times. A reformation of the justice system has led to people being convicted of crimes serving their sentence in a cell in the home of their victims - this is billed as a way to increase rehabilitation (with the thinking that if they have to face their victims every day they will have a deeper remorse about their actions) but seems more like a way for the government to save money.
Hannah’s husband, a policeman, is murdered and the man convicted of this, Jem, is installed in her kitchen for 20 years. The book is about Hannah finding out more about the murder and about who she is, it was really engrossing. Some of the plot points are a little unbelievable and Hannah appears to make emphatic decisions about complex things too quickly sometimes but it was still such an enjoyable read.
