I agree with the author’s assessment of this thriller in her acknowledgments ‘This is a pretty crazy idea for a novel’. But it has produced an extremely good read that climaxes in a clever and unexpected denouement.
I was hooked from the very first sentence where Hannah is waiting for the man who murdered her police detective husband to be installed in a cage built into her kitchen. Future justice is the responsibility of the victim - only cases where the victim or their family are prepared to have the convict living in their home for the duration of the sentence ever get prosecuted.
I anticipated a psychological thriller where the physical presence of the captive, Jem, would terrorise the widow, but Hannah senses that Jem’s protestations of his innocence may be true. They conspire to escape together and uncover the truth about John’s murder.
I loved it.
