Hannah a young women lives in a time where prisons do not exist. Instead if you are a crime victim the criminal if found guilty comes to live with you. They live in a small cage in your house and you need to feed and take care of them. This it thought to work better and also saves the government money!
Hannah's husband was a police officer killed during a mugging and the criminal Jem comes to live with her. Jem denies he commited the crime and Hannah starts to wonder what really happened.
She decides to investigate her husbands life before the crime and starts to unravel his secret life.
This also leads her to become involved with Jem and their story becomes intertwined with her investigation. The story is told in alternating chapters of the past for Jem leading up to the murder and the present for both of them.
This story involves a concept that I was intrigued to find out more about.
