The book starts with Hannah awaiting the arrival of Jem, the man who murdered her husband. Under the current justice system she now has a cage in her kitchen in which Jem will reside for the duration of his sentence. Under the new laws if you pursue a prosecution, you will be responsible for hosting the criminal. Hannah has seen what can happen. There is a woman who lives around the corner who prosecuted her rapist and now she can't live in the house, but lives in a tent outside as she is not allowed to leave the property.
In the beginning Hannah is righteously angry at Jem, but gradually gets to know him and when he tells her that he didn't murder her husband, at first she feels he is taking advantage of her good nature. However, when she looks into the things he tells her, she is drawn into to a web of lies which has enveloped her husband, her best friend and his best friend.
Very, very readable.
