The synopsis of this book had me hooked. I am drawn to anything involving restorative justice and this took it to the extreme! Imagine having a criminal who had committed a crime against you, living in your home, and being responsible for meeting their needs...

The actual story of this book is so much more than I could ever have imagined. A story or trauma, love, loss and betrayal that has so many layers you wonder if you will ever find out the truth!

I love the characters in this book, they are all so believable and add depth to the whole story. I love Pru the next door neighbour, who plays a small but vital part in the story, as well as adding more depth around how we treat people and the different kinds of prisons we face in life.

The story builds to a terrifying climax, where we do finally learn the truth and the complex web of circumstances that led to Jem being imprisoned in Hannah’s kitchen.

The story shows people as human, all of us flawed and fighting various demons and circumstance. It really makes you think about justice and the ramifications of restorative justice taken to extremes.
