Very strange concept for a prison. If you set aside all the flaws that a system of this type would have...criminals going unpunished, vigilante style justice etc...it's an easy enough read. However I found that when the relationship progressed to a romantic one between Hannah and Jem I found myself wondering off it was entirely necessary. But really that's what led to the escape attempt which was required for Jem's overall story. It was a little predictable in so far as John's affair with Aisling but there was some misdirection as to the final reveal with the dormouse.
I was glad in the end that all of John's misdeeds were not as they appeared and having opened up the romantic relationship with Hannah and Jem that it worked out for them but overall I felt like I expected more from this book when I originally read the first impression on readers first
