I was super impressed with this thriller and would definitely recommend it to those who usually find thrillers a bit repetitive. The Captive has a slight dystopian element: as part of reparative and restorative justice, victims or their families are to keep their perpetrators in a cage within their homes. Hannah's partner was murdered in an alley one evening, and now the alleged murderer is living in her house. She is terrified of him escaping and all she wants to do is get rid of him.. but then things start to change...

My favourite thing about this book was the suspense and tension that the unusual plot created; I had absolutely no idea where it was heading. As someone who has read quite a few thrillers, I often find myself getting bored and easily guessing what will happen - but I genuinely had no clue with this one. I would say that I was just a tad disappointed in the ending as it did end like a lot of other thrillers and after nearly all of the book being really original, I felt a little let down. But, nonetheless, it was still full of twists and turns. The story did get a little uncomfortable in places - if you've read it then you will probably know which parts I'm talking about... but I think you just have to go with it as it's such an odd plot anyway! So overall, I would definitely recommend this book if you want to try something new with your thrillers, just be prepared to enjoy being a little weirded out by the whole concept.

Thanks to Zaffre for a copy of this book.
