Deborah O'Connor's The Captive is the best book I've read this year. I couldn't put it down and finished it in a matter of days. Hannah lives in a country where restorative justice is the rule, which means that if someone is accused of a crime against you, they will complete their sentence in a cell inside your house. This was an interesting concept to me, and I enjoyed seeing how it was discussed in the novel. Separate chapters are written from the perspectives of both the victim and the inmate, giving the story a new dimension and allowing you to see the events from both perspectives. The writing is fast-paced in the novel, and you'll be left wondering what happened to Hannah's husband until the very end.Despite what might seem to be a far-fetched storey, I noticed that the author managed to maintain a strong sense of realism. It's a cleverly crafted book that's a lot of fun to read.
