This book is set around a rather scary concept where instead of being sent to prison, convicted criminals are caged in their victims homes. It is the victims responsibility to care for their prisoner, to feed them, to look after them and ultimately to have them in their house at all times. The idea of this is that the prisoners will see the impact of their crime and it will therefore aid rehabilitation. For me though this just seems to be a further punishment to the victim of the crime.

When Hannah’s husbands killer is placed into her home you really feel for her. To have to look at the person who killed her husband every day and be reminded of this must be absolutely awful, probably even more so when he is still claiming his innocence regardless of all the evidence.

As a lover of crime shows I was really interested and intrigued by Hannah’s quest for the truth. Was Jem really innocent or was he just trying to get her on side? Everyone around her is adamant not to trust him, after all he is a criminal, but some of the things he says spring alarm bells for Hannah. There are certain things that he just shouldn’t know and it wouldn’t be something someone made up.

Her quest to uncover the truth behind John’s death takes her to numerous shady places, some she probably really shouldn’t be visiting but as she discovers more and more you see that things definitely aren’t how they originally seemed.

I didn’t see the twist at the end coming at all and was definitely surprised by it, these chapters had my heart racing and I felt like I just had to keep reading.

This was such a good book that I actually really enjoyed, even if the thought of having a prisoner in my kitchen was pretty terrifying!
