The Colours that Blind is a truly thought provoking read, especially within the current climate. It is a book of two stories which both make the reader think about race. The main story is of Tumi, a boy from Zimbabwe with Albinism. It focuses on his anxiety after being kidnapped by his own uncle, who wanted to sell him to those who believed that his condition possessed magical healing powers. Of course, this educates readers about the horrible treatment people with Albinism are experiencing in some parts of southern Africa.

The second story is told by his grandmother who worked for a white family on a tea plantation during the Zimbabwean uprising. In her story the racial tension and the awful treatment towards black people is exposed. Her stories helps the reader to understand the tensions that existed and why.

Parts are hard to read, as the author is not scared to provide graphic details about the experiences of war. She exposes the problematic attitudes and horrible treatment of black people white settlers, as well as the cruelty inflicted by the comrades.

I found this book hard to put down, as the author provides plenty of anxious situations.
