I wasn't expecting to like this book, the subject matter isn't one I would normally go for and being set abroad I find it harder to relate to - the story follows the teenage Tumiari in Zimbabwe and although set in Africa Tumairi has the same teenage worries as kids all over the world....does he look right, music playing ...what will people think of him. I was drawn to the character of his grandmother, she had obviously lived through some terrible times and yet manages to be stoic and give advice. I found that although I didn't have a clue with regard to Tumiari's culture and issues due to the brilliant writing this book became very readable and I couldn't put it down wanting to know what would happen next!
