This isn't my normal type of book nor have I heard of the author before. However with the things that are going on in the world I've been wanting to read more diverse books to broaden my knowledge and understanding.
This story follows Tumi a young teenager from Zimbabwe who struggles with hatred and exclusion that his albinism brings him. Sole focusing on his swimming competitions that bring him some kind of solace. But he ends up having to go to his Grandmothers, where a terrible trauma had once happened and Tumi fears each night.
The story starts with a moving quote "Hope Is Our Only Wing" which also is the authors first novel. Then you're drawn into Tumi and what he is going through, what he looks like, the music he listens to normal coming of age things a teen goes through. Your introduced to his bizarre family and this thing that has happened but nothing has been said about.
The way the story goes is like a narrative diary type. I loved it from the first page and already wondering so many things. What is Tumi fearful of? What happened at his Grandmothers house? Why did his father disappear? It's gotten me so intrigued that I have to find out. From the 2 chapters I've read I'm hooked and have put it on my wishlist to buy and read.
I can see this book diving into the topics that are so needed right at this moment. Race, exclusion, trying to be someone your not, fitting in. So many important topics. I'm impressed and eager to know and learn more.
