This took me a while to get into, there are several characters and they all have nicknames or are known by other names, I didn’t feel like I got to know them but I did keep reading to want to get to know them more. The emotions and family relationships made this an enjoyable read. The story of Tumi and his desire to make captain of the swim team and his frustrations when he was sent away to stay with his grandmother felt very real and I could empathise with his feelings. His grandmother has her own story to tell and I enjoyed reading about the bond between them growing as she enlightened him on her life growing up. I felt out of my comfort zone reading this; I think it’s a worthwhile read for all.
