I carry an organ donation card so that every organ of my body can be used in the event of my death...apart from my eyes! Having read 'The Curious Heart of Ailsa Rae', I've changed my arrangements to include my eyes...
The book introduces us to Ailsa Rae who we learn was born with hypoplastic left heart syndrome. When we meet her, she is coming to terms with the fact that her life may be coming to an end. There is further sadness surrounding Ailsa's current situation as an ex boyfriend of her's has died.
The story brings to life the emotional turmoil a person, like Ailsa, goes through whilst waiting for a potential donor and the mixed emotion when an organ becomes available - somebody else's death saves a life. As a parent, I felt the sense of desperation that Hayley (Ailsa's Mum) felt and her reluctance to let go after spending all of Ailsa's life caring for her.
As Ailsa's health improves she decides how she's going to live her life and what she wants to achieve...meeting a very special someone along the way!
