We learn of Ailsa's story entirely from her point of view but the occasional blog entries and email conversations provide a varied pace together with the persona she presents to the world and the voices of her friends. We also meet the invalid Ailsa from before her heart transplant and begin to understand the enormous changes to every part of her life experience this operation has triggered.

Poor health is central to this story but it is by no means all dour; there are shafts of humour and brightness on every page as Ailsa adjusts to her new life, pastimes, talents and ambitions. Several well-developed relationships in Ailsa's life weave a strong texture of support and interest throughout.

From Ailsa's unique position we learn about coping with change, about caring and achieving independence and, perhaps most importantly, about finding out who you really are.
