Rachel's day gets off to a bad start when the houseboat she shares with her partner, Hunter, is broken into. It only gets worse when the police visit her at work to tell her that Hunter has been knocked off his bike and is in hospital, badly injured. Hunter seems less concerned with his own plight and is more worried about Alfie, a homeless man he has been interviewing as part of a documentary about how people's lives can fall apart fast.
Caroline is also in a bad place. A recent story she has written for her newspaper has resulted in a court case that her editor is less than sympathetic about. Suspended, pending further developments, she heads home to Ireland to try and work out how to proceed.
