The basis of this storyline sounds interesting. The initial character and the letter he sends definitely started the book off well. There was potential for something to develop from this and a certain level of intrigue. There probably could have been more, the second (and I imagine main) character to be introduced was instantly less likeable, but perhaps would grow on you the more you read her story.
