I'd like to start this off by thanking the team at Readers First and Corvus for sending me a copy of The Dark Room to read.

Rachel leaves London afraid for her personal safety after her partner is left in the hospital, whilst Caroline leaves New York after her boss casts her aside and makes her feel small. Both, with their own personal investigations to solve, end up in quiet hotel-house Hare's Landing. Known for its dark history and beautiful architecture, Hare's Landing is a hive for strange activity, but the stranger things start to happen when Rachel and Caroline start to notice their investigations and findings are heavily linked...

From the preview snippet I read of The Dark Room, I really thought it would be one of those books I'd rave about and couldn't put down. However, The Dark Room was actually quite the opposite. I'd describe it as a 'Slow Burning Supernatural Book' that has many layers - some of which, I wasn't a huge fan of.

It started out strong, throwing you into the deep end but soon enough, my attention wavered quite rapidly. I felt like there were too many characters and too much backstory that then started to overlap the main plot and it became a bit messy. I liked the idea of there being some deeply hidden mystery in the house, but when things started to become more ghostly I lost touch with that thriller aspect that I know and love.

The characters were very bold, with the two main protagonists being very likeable. However, I often found myself saying 'as if!' when it came to them somewhat micro-managing the hotel when huge things would happen.

Honestly, I enjoyed the overall plot of the book and did find The Dark Room to be a good read, but it could've definitely been shorter and more concise. A cosy read for winter, but not what I had originally anticipated. 3.5 stars...
