The Dark Room follows two main characters Caroline and Rachel, who are both originally from Ireland. Caroline is a journalist in New York, and after an incident in her job she takes a vacation to Ireland to a place called Hare’s Landing, where Rachel also ends up after a set of mysterious circumstances involving the death homeless man her partner was interviewing for a documentary. Once there, they both become involved in an old mystery that resurfaces as Rachel investigates the homeless man’s link to Hare’s Landing and Caroline investigates a set of disappearances that occurred years ago.

I enjoyed the plot of the novel. As you can tell from the description above, the mystery was very intriguing and I liked the way the two different storylines merged together to create lots of twists and complexity in the mystery. I also enjoyed hearing from both women’s point of view as they were likeable and relatable characters. However, I did feel the plot was a bit slow at times as it took a while for the two women to meet, and the mystery progressed somewhat slowly. I feel like more of a mysterious, tense mood could have been created as the ‘dramatic’ events in the novel could have been made scarier and there could have been closer calls for the two women. That said, it was an enjoyable read and the ending was pretty satisfying.
