An eighteenth century Jack Reacher meets Hercule Poirot.

Justice (Justy) Flannagan is a man of many talents - sailor, lawyer, street fighter, Irish rebel/freedom fighter and solver of crimes. He has returned to New York to find his father's murderer having worked alongside the French police on one of his many travels. Upon arrival in New York he sees the recovery of the body of a Black woman from the waters of the dock area and witnesses the growing tension between the Irish and Black longshoremen, as well as the clash between those wanting to free the Black slaves and those wanting to maintain the status quo.

Against this complex background he must search for the truth surrounding his father's death as well as trying to solve a string of murders amid a powder keg of emotions.
