I thought there was a great sense of place and period, with details such as the way belongings were shredded by rats on a long sea voyage adding authenticity. Thankfully the violence was more implied and alluded to than described in detail, as with the blood splatter on the detailed picture of the historical setting on the cover. The leading characters were interesting and sympathetic too.
