I instantly liked the style of writing and this is my favourite genre so I devoured the first look chapters and look forward to reading the rest. First impressions suggest this is both a lesson in history, a murder mystery and a discussion of race. The main character has clearly been on a long a difficult journey, he is disheveled from his travels, but jumps instantly into action - he is keen to waste no time in the search for finding out what happened to his father. Interestingly this fervour is juxtaposed with a slowness as the main character slowly covers up the body of the 13 year old murdered black girl. He is respectful against a backdrop of people who seem to treat people of a different colour with disdain. I hope this book continues as it started and successfully weaves history, race and detective novel together. I look forward to reading and finding out!
