This was a really good first impression from the blurb and the first 14 pages the basic idea of the story was set out, and I liked the tone and pace.
The mundane life followed by the clandestine meeting was good, and the premise of a son taking his grandmother on a tour of Europe whilst being involved in some kind of espionage.

My only hesitation is that I have read some of Michael Ridpath's other books and find that they tended to start well and then tail off, or drone on, but maybe this will break from that pattern.

Certainly this first impression shows promise and hasn't given much away, I'm not sure if this will be a tale told in flashbacks and interludes or if it will start that way and merge into an adventure.

The blurb points one way, the first impression another,
Could be worth giving it an read to find out though!
