I really enjoyed this first impression. In the first few chapters our scene is set; first in 1979 and then back in the 1930s. I like how Phil and his Grandmother's planned trip together across Europe comes about - it is a perfectly plausible idea that Phil would be banned from going on his trip because he wrote off the family car. I am also intrigued to learn how Emma's brother Hugh meets his demise, and how this spurs her on to make decisions that will still have an impact decades later...
