This story of European espionage is told through two timelines. Phil is a young man in the 70s who has just taken his A levels and waiting to go to university. His strong desire is to hitchhike through Europe but has been told by his parents that he can't do this. Phil's grandmother invites him to go with her instead. A plan that is acceptable to his parents. Before he goes he is approached in a pub by a mysterious stranger who, we assume, is recruiting him to do some sort of underhand spying while he is abroad.
The second timeline explores Phil's grandmother's adventures in the 30s when she went to Europe as a fervent (and upper class) communist.
Both storylines are very compelling and invite you to read more. The adventures Phil and his grandmother will have over the summer will no doubt be linked to the Cold War and the antics his grandmother got up to when she was younger and before she married a diplomat.
