I have really enjoyed the author’s previous book, Launch Code, so was looking forward to the novel, however I am a bit split on my opinion of it. If three and a half stars were an option then that is what I would be giving it.

It is a great story but is very confusing at times with too many characters. I felt I almost had to take notes to try and follow who was who and how they all related to each other. No doubt to the author each character was important but I think the story would have been better with a few less.

The switching between 1979 and the war years was well done and linked nicely without detriment to the plot.

I wasn’t one hundred percent convinced by the two main characters of Emma and Phil and found them a bit twee at times. I think more depth to their characters and a smaller number of people in supporting roles would have made the book far stronger.

Notwithstanding the above, I still enjoyed the book and admire the amount of research the author must have taken and his knowledge, hence the four stars.
