It is no surprise that Michael Ridpath is an internationally best selling author if The Diplomat's Wife is anything to go by. The book's duel narrative was immensely interesting, and the structure of the novel was fascinating and really added to the plot. Emma, the diplomat's wife, is the main protagonists of the story, and along with her grandson, Phil, she visits places in Europe that were important to her and her husband while she reminisces about her life with him. As one can guess, the life of a diplomat's wife is not an easy one, and tales about spies and betrayal come to the fore, as the book's tagline suggests ('to love, honour, and betray').

A novel full of twists and turns, and is one of the best thrillers I have read in a long time. The characters are presented to us as real people, with flaws and all, and the relationship between Emma and Phil is believable, and the ending is shocking and unexpected, making for an exciting read. Ridpath is an excellent writer and I will definitely be seeking out more of his work.
