Michael Ridpath has, once again, written a compelling thriller although, this time, he has set the action in 1979 when Emma with her grandson, Phil, as her driver set out to revisit the places in Europe where her and her husband lived before the second world war when he was in the diplomatic service. Emma grew up in a family at a time when only sons were formally educated however her learning came from her brother, Hugh, who had developed socialist leanings which Emma also embraced. After Hugh's sudden death in a car accident Emma is heartbroken and becomes involved with a young, ambitious diplomat who she marries and they leave for various postings in Europe until the war. The Diplomat's Wife has so many unexpected twists and turns keeping readers engrossed and intrigued as to what might happen next. Any reader who enjoys a good mystery story or stories about the war will thoroughly enjoy this wonderful book.
