This is wonderful book, combining excellently researched history with an interesting story and well drawn characters.
It starts off as a seemingly innocent family saga and gradually weaves into a fabulous mystery that I became thoroughly invested in, which meant I could not wait to discover the conclusion.
The book flashes from past to present, revealing the story cleverly. This meant that my opinions of the main two characters changed as often as the chapters.
The relationship between Phil and his Grandmother is interesting, and evolves as the story progresses, showing Phil that she is not a boring old lady, but actually lead a very chequered life.
I feel the responsibility she gives to Phil, by including him in her last adventure is fantastic. It forges an important bond between them and is pivotal to making the book so enjoyable.
I would thoroughly recommend this.
