This is a thriller that is set in two different timelines, flashbacks of 1934 and 1979 with two narrators that of Emma and the narrator giving the viewpoint of her grandson, Phil.

In 1979, eager for an adventure and penniless Phil accompanies his grandmother on a journey into her past.

Flashbacks from 1934, Emma recalls her past, the loss of her brother and the conflicts in her early marriage to a powerful opportunist of a diplomat.

I liked how the author had two narratives because it gives you a greater insight of all the characters. I liked the fact the central character is female and her viewpoints are written as a first person narrative. It makes you understand the character better and the challenges she faces.

I also liked the synopsis and front cover as I thought it be a historical fiction. However, this has the added element of mystery.
