Alexa lives in Cornwall with her father who remarried less than a year after her mother died producing another daughter. After she returned from boarding school she rejects her best friends public proposal of marriage and runs away to be a ladies companion in London, and from there goes to Venice. She meets life with arrogance and makes many ill advised decisions.
This historical saga is quite well written and easy to read but the characters are insubstantial and inconsistent, changing with out reason to facilitate the plot. There are some interesting twists and turns in the plot which keeps you reading. I cannot wholeheartedly recommend this novel but it would keep you occupied by the pool on holiday.
