Set in 1924 and 1931, the story follows Alexa, greatly affected by the death of her mother for which she believes she is responsible. Her quest to find her grandmother to gain absolution for the tragedy that unfolded. Her life long friend Harvey proposes on the night of her eighteenth birthday in a bid to keep her in Cornwall, this sets of a chain of events which take us to London and then on to Venice finally returning to Cornwall where the culmination of the bad timed proposal is reached. Alexa is a character who just wants to be loved, this causes her to fall under the spell of Guy until she is finally rescued by Harvey. Can they finally grasp the happiness that should be theirs, or have too many people been hurt?
