I like books with this level of detail - the minutiae of everyday life. It makes you care for the characters more when the book progresses into the actual story-line. I'm not sure that I buy into the visit to the doctor suddenly triggering off anxieties about the adoption, but I'm still eager to find out more of the back-story...
