Caroline Bond seems to have a way of making stories relatable, even if they are about areas the reader is not familiar with. This story captures some of the trials that adoptive families must face, what makes a family ‘family’. The characters are flawed, which makes them seem more real, and the situations they face both emotional and raw. The care system seems well depicted, overrun and trying to do their best and failing.
I was anxious for quite a lot of the story (good job by the author!) and certainly wanted to reach the end quickly to see how the twists were resolved.
Caroline writes about interesting but challenging family issues and this book is no exception. It made my pulse race on several occasions. There were also moments when I wanted to shout at one of the characters, to stop her behaviours, which again is a sign of a great story.
