The issue of adoption could so easily be handled in an obvious way. This is very well done indeed. Both parents and children are realistically drawn in this story.

All parents have to walk between the paths of overprotection and wanting their children to become independent. The daily details which parents have to navigate are rendered very well. Equally, Cassie’s growing sense of her sexual self is balanced beautifully with her own insecurities. As someone who didn’t know her mother, I have grappled with many of the questions she has. This was handled beautifully by the writer. The dialogue in the novel is realistic which adds to the engagement in this story for the reader.

A really interesting read.
