No annoying prologue, no hopping about from one time zone to another, no swapping narrators, this is a straightforward tale about the first 18 years in the life of Lizzie Wood.
The story starts in 1932 when Jack Wood meets Alice Rooney at a dance in Blaydon. Nine months later Lizzie is born and Jack does the honourable thing and marries Alice. Alice has had a poor upbringing and is illiterate. She is jealous of the love and attention Jack's family give to her daughter, Lizzie, and does her best to spoil and ruin every moment of Lizzie's upbringing. Her grandmother provides the only escape for Lizzie - weekly dance lessons at Madame Bella's dance academy.
This book ends in 1950 when Lizzie is 18 and about to start a whole new life.
I look forward to reading the sequel.
