She is jealous of the love and attention Jack's family give to her daughter, Lizzie, and does her best to spoil and ruin every moment of Lizzie's upbringing. Her grandmother provides the only escape for Lizzie - weekly dance lessons at Madame Bella's dance academy.
This book ends in 1950 when Lizzie is 18 and about to start a whole new life.
